How Persistent Prayer Changes Your Life
Luke 18:1 (NKJV)
“Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.”
Sometimes we pray, but nothing seems to happen.
We ask God for help, but the answer does not come right away.
Days may become weeks. Weeks may become months.
We may begin to wonder, “God, are You listening?”
Jesus tells us not to give up.
Persistent prayer does more than bring our needs before God. As we keep praying, God can strengthen our trust, change our hearts, give us peace, and draw us closer to Him.
What Is Persistent Prayer?
Persistent prayer means continuing to talk with God even when you cannot see what He is doing.
It does not mean trying to force God to give you what you want.
It means bringing your needs to Him again and again while trusting His wisdom and timing.
Persistent prayer says:
“God, I still need You.”
“I still trust You.”
“I will keep coming to You.”
Prayer is not only about receiving an answer. Prayer is also about building a deeper relationship with God.
1. Jesus Taught Us to Keep Praying
In Luke 18, Jesus told a story about a widow who kept asking a judge for help.
She did not quit because the answer was slow.
She kept going back.
Jesus used this story to teach His followers about persistent prayer.
When answers take time, our first response may be to stop praying.
Jesus teaches us to do the opposite.
Keep praying.
Bring your need back to God.
Talk with Him honestly.
Trust Him with what happens next.
Try this today: Think of one prayer you have almost stopped praying. Bring that need to God again today.
2. Persistent Prayer Strengthens Your Trust
When you keep praying, you learn to trust God more.
You may not understand His timing.
You may not understand why He has not answered the way you hoped.
But you can still trust His heart.
Waiting does not mean God has forgotten you.
Sometimes God changes the situation.
Sometimes He changes you while you wait.
He may teach you patience.
He may give you courage.
He may give you wisdom.
He may build deeper faith in you.
Prayer teaches us to trust God even when we cannot see the answer.
Try this today: Instead of praying only, “God, change this,” also pray, “God, help me trust You while I wait.”
3. Persistent Prayer Changes Your Heart
Sometimes we begin praying because we want God to change someone else.
We may pray:
“God, change this person.”
But as we keep praying, God may show us something that needs to change inside us.
He may help us forgive.
He may teach us to love.
He may help us let go of anger.
He may help us see another person with more grace.
Persistent prayer keeps bringing us back into God's presence.
And being close to God changes us.
Try this today: Ask, “Lord, is there anything You want to change in my heart?”
4. Persistent Prayer Can Bring Peace While You Wait
You can bring your fears, pain, questions, and needs to God.
Philippians 4:6–7 (NKJV) teaches us to bring everything to God through prayer.
The problem may not disappear right away.
The answer may still be coming.
But you do not have to carry the burden alone.
Prayer reminds you that God is with you.
His peace can guard your heart and mind even while you are still waiting.
Peace does not always mean the problem is gone.
Sometimes peace means knowing God is with you in the middle of the problem.
Try this today: Tell God the one thing that is worrying you most. Then ask Him to help you trust Him with it.
5. Do Not Lose Heart
Maybe you have prayed about something for a long time.
Keep praying.
You may not see an answer today.
You may not understand what God is doing.
But Jesus tells us to pray and not lose heart.
Bring the need to God again tomorrow.
Trust Him with the answer.
Trust Him with the timing.
Persistent prayer is not about forcing God to do what we want.
It is about staying close to Him while we wait.
Try this today: Choose one prayer you will continue bringing to God this week.
A Simple Plan for Persistent Prayer
When you feel like giving up, remember these five steps:
PRAY — Bring everything to God.
BE PATIENT — Trust His timing.
DON'T LOSE HEART — Keep going.
SEE CHANGE — Watch for God's work in you and around you.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE — Let what God teaches you help you serve others.
You may begin praying because you want God to change your situation.
Along the way, you may discover that God is also changing you.
PRAY → BE PATIENT → DON'T LOSE HEART → SEE CHANGE → MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
What If God Seems Silent?
Persistent prayer can become especially difficult when God seems silent.
You may pray again and again without understanding what God is doing.
During those seasons, do not allow silence to become a reason to walk away.
